Talc is widely used as a raw material for light industrial products as well as for agriculture, cosmetics and medicine. Its main use and quality requirements are described below.
(1) the use and quality requirements of a block of talc
Block talc can be divided into two types according to its use, namely industrial talc and cosmetic talc, each with corresponding quality requirements.
1. Industrial talc
According to the national standard bg1534-94, industrial talc is divided into three specifications according to any one of the largest dimensions of block length, width and thickness:
Large block talc: the largest side should be larger than 200mm;
Middle block talc: the largest edge size is 20 ~ 200mm;
Small-grained talc: the maximum grain size is less than 20mm.
The small talc is further divided into three quality grades: no. 1, no. 2 and no. 3. The physical and chemical properties of industrial talc should meet the requirements in table 1. A block of talc is used for making talc porcelain, firebrick and electric plate, carving arts and crafts, and filling in cosmetics and food.
Cosmetic talc
Cosmetic grade block talc has high quality requirements and strict physical and chemical properties. For example, there are no sand particles in the ore and there is a sense of lubrication. The total number of bacteria is less than or equal to 500 /g, and mold is less than or equal to 100 /g. Pathogenic bacteria such as e. coli, staphylococcus and pseudomonas aeruginosa should not be detected. When grinded into talc powder, the fineness is greater than or equal to 75 degrees Celsius m, and the passing rate is 98.0%. Heavy metal content is less than or equal to 40 times 10-4.
(2) USES and technical and economic indicators of talc powder
Talc powder is widely used in the papermaking industry, followed by waterproof material industry.
1. Paper industry
Talc powder has three main USES in the paper industry, namely as a resin control agent for fillers, coatings and pulp. Talc can make the paper solid and white, increase the opacity and brightness, enhance the ink adsorption capacity. Talc has a strong adhesion to pigment, so that color prints get a good color effect.
The abrasion value of the concave surface of talc is very low. Moreover, the density of talc is less than TiO2, so it is superior to TiO2 as filler. The price of talc powder is much lower than that of titanium dioxide, making it more competitive.
Talc powder has been successfully used in the deinking process of waste paper.
Physical and chemical performance indexes of papermaking grade talc powder are shown in table 2.
2. Waterproof material
Talc can be used as filling material for roofing products, such as asphalt felt, roofing paper, asphalt tile, roofing board, etc. When used as a filling material, talc ACTS as a stabilizer in the melted asphalt components, increasing the stability and weathering resistance of roof materials. When talc is sprayed on the surface of asphalt tiles or rolled roofing materials, it can prevent them from sticking during production and storage.
The waterproof material industry can use low grade colored and impure coarse grinding talc powder, and its technical requirements (bg15342-94) are listed in table 3.
3. Other industries
Talc has important applications in plastics, rubber, cable, ceramic, coating and textile industries. Its technical requirements are as follows: bg15342-84. No national standards have been set for other USES.
